Two-Day CME Course Overview
This intensive, hands-on workshop will provide you with the skills and confidence to perform essential procedures in clinical practice. This course is ideal for healthcare professionals who want to enhance their practical skills in a supportive learning environment. CME for nurse practitioners and other healthcare providers is available.
What You Will Learn
SUTURING:
Learn how to choose the correct type of suture and needles, as well as techniques for anesthesia and the evidence-based approaches to the skill on simulated tissue.
Learn five different suture techniques including: simple interrupted; running suture; horizontal mattress; vertical mattress; and corner stitch. Learn and practice local anesthesia techniques and digital blocks. This also includes information on skin adhesives, wound closure tapes, and staples.
CRYOTHERAPY:
Gain hands-on experience with cryotherapy to treat various skin conditions and lesions. Learn the principles of cryotherapy, including selecting the appropriate cryogen, applying cryotherapy to common lesions, and understanding patient aftercare and side effect management.
SHAVE AND PUNCH BIOPSIES:
Master techniques for skin biopsies, including shave and punch methods, to effectively diagnose and manage dermatological conditions. Learn how to select the appropriate technique based on lesion type, and gain practical experience in biopsy tool handling, site preparation, and specimen labeling.
INCISION AND DRAINAGE:
Learn different methods to approach abscesses and perform incision and drainage, including appropriate aftercare techniques. Practice on simulated abscesses to develop skills for safe and effective management, including instrument selection, anesthesia, and sterile field maintenance.
Skills Plus Specialized Workshops
SPLINTING AND CASTING:
Learn the essential mechanics of splinting injuries, including indications for when a cast is necessary. Gain hands-on experience by practicing the application and removal of fiberglass casts on a partner.
TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS:
Understand the physiology and causes of trigger point pain. Develop skills to identify and accurately locate trigger points. Practice performing trigger point injections on a model to enhance your technique.
JOINT INJECTIONS:
Review the key aspects of joint injections, including the underlying physiology and pharmacology. Learn to identify pertinent anatomical landmarks and practice joint injection techniques on a model for real-world application.
PLANTAR FASCIA INJECTIONS:
Study the pathophysiology and diagnostic criteria of plantar fasciitis. Discuss various conservative treatment methods and the pharmacology involved. Practice performing plantar fascia injections on a model to ensure accuracy and effectiveness.
TRIGGER FINGER INJECTIONS:
Explore conditions such as trigger finger/thumb, DeQuervain's tenosynovitis, and Dupuytren's contracture. Practice the techniques for injecting these conditions on a model, ensuring you can perform them confidently in clinical settings.
TOENAIL REMOVAL:
Learn the clinical indications for toenail removal and the instruments required for the procedure. Practice the proper techniques for toenail removal on a model, focusing on precision and patient comfort.
DIGITAL BLOCK:
Master the techniques for performing digital blocks, understanding their indications, contraindications, and potential complications. Gain practical experience by practicing these techniques on a model.
Accreditation
- American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP): Approved for 14.5 contact hours of accredited education, including 3.80 hours of pharmacology.
- American Academy of PAs (AAPA): This activity is compliant with AAPA CME Criteria. It is designated for 15 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation. Approval is valid from 4/12/2024 to 4/11/2025. AAPA reference number: CME-2011179.
